What is SOD

SOD is a kind of enzyme that can catalyze the disproportionation of superoxide anion radical (O2 -) to H2O2 and O2. This enzyme is widely distributed and has been isolated from bacteria, fungi, algae, plants, protozoa, insects, fish and mammals.


The superoxide dismutase is very stable. The SOD of bovine red blood cells is still rarely inactivated after being heated at 75 ℃ for several minutes. It is also relatively stable to acids and bases, and can react within the range of pH 5.3~10.5.


Superoxide dismutase has the functions of antioxidation and anti-aging, and its mechanism is mainly to eliminate superoxide anion free radicals (O2 -) which are harmful to the body. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) has a unique effect on the treatment of diseases caused by superoxide free radicals (O2 -), such as oxygen poisoning, acute inflammation, various autoimmune diseases, radiation sickness and senile cataract. Basic Function

The main function of SOD is to catalyze the disproportionation of superoxide anion radicals into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen, and the superoxide anion radicals produced are normal metabolites in the organism. However, the accumulation of free radicals will lead to lipid peroxidation of cell membrane, which will cause membrane fission, leading to cell damage and even death. SOD is the most important and best free radical scavenger in the organism to maintain the metabolic balance of the organism.


In addition, SOD has significant effect on the treatment of myocardial infarction, vascular heart disease, collagen disease, neonatal dyspnea syndrome, edema, emphysema, oxygen poisoning and other diseases, as well as psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema, pruritus and other skin diseases. 1. Medicine

The superoxide free radicals in the body can cause various diseases. As its natural scavenger, SOD keeps a dynamic balance with it under normal conditions. However, under pathological conditions, excessive superoxide free radicals are produced, and the SOD produced by the body itself cannot completely eliminate these excessive superoxide free radicals, which are harmful to the body. SOD can catalyze its disproportionation reaction and alleviate the disease.  


Workers engaged in radiation work with poor protection will form various products in their bodies after receiving ionizing radiation, and the products will have a chain reaction, generating many free radicals to attack the human body, leading to radiation sickness. The increase of SOD can inhibit the formation of tumor caused by radiation, increase the differentiation ability of fibroblast, and effectively prevent the malignant development of tumor.  


In addition, SOD can be used not only for disease treatment, but also for clinical examination. For example, SOD can be used as a diagnostic indicator of silicosis.
