What Is Paeonia Lactiflora Extract?

Paeonia lactiflora is a plant native to central and eastern Asia, commonly known as Chinese peony. It is a popular ornamental plant and has been used traditionally in Chinese medicine for thousands of years to treat a variety of ailments, including fever, inflammation, pain, and menstrual disorders. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the potential health benefits of Paeonia lactiflora extract, particularly its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This article will review the current scientific literature on Paeonia lactiflora extract and its potential therapeutic applications.

Chemical Composition

Paeonia lactiflora contains a wide range of biologically active compounds, including phenols, flavonoids, triterpenoids, and monoterpene glycosides. Antioxidants are compounds that neutralize free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can cause cellular damage and contribute to numerous diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative disorders. In vitro studies have shown that Paeonia lactiflora extract can scavenge free radicals and protect cells against oxidative stress. Another study investigated the effect of Paeonia lactiflora extract on colitis in a mouse model. The results showed that Paeonia lactiflora extract reduced colonic inflammation and histological damage by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and increasing the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines.
